About

This is the climax of the Toko Yasaka Shrine tonin rites, a cycle that begins each year on July 8 and runs for a full year. The rites are a nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property handed down with great strictness for over a thousand years. On July 7, the rites unfold in the Tenno district of Katagami and the Funakoshi district of Oga. As mountain drums echo through the shrine grounds, the portable shrine sets out, and a man embodying the god Susanoo rides a sacred bull to the Tenno shore of the Funakoshi Channel. When the procession arrives the drums all thunder at once, and on a boat a figure clad in deep crimson, embodying the eight-headed serpent Yamata-no-Orochi, performs the kumomai spider dance, re-enacting the myth of Susanoo slaying the serpent.
