About
Held since 1910 in Omagari, Daisen, this is Japan's most prestigious fireworks competition. Pyrotechnicians selected from across the country launch shells they made themselves, competing for the Prime Minister's Prize. The daytime section – the only daytime fireworks contest in Japan – is judged on the color and shape of smoke, while the night section features two large 10-gou shells and a "creative fireworks" show of up to two and a half minutes, each built around a theme chosen by the maker. Creative fireworks became an official competition category here in 1964 for the first time in Japan and remain the event's signature. Between entries, the famous festival-sponsored "wide star mine" spans some 900 meters across the sky, lighting up the Omono River with the Dewa Hills as a backdrop. The 2026 edition brought together 28 companies and about 18,000 shells.
