About
This early-summer festival takes place at Yasumiya on the shore of Lake Towada, a caldera lake in Towada-Hachimantai National Park. It had been held 60 times, but rising costs and staff shortages led organizers to consider calling it off. For 2026, ninety years after the area became a national park, organizers condensed the usual two days into a single day. By day, food stalls and kitchen cars line a lantern-lit fair area while performers take the stage. After dark, balloon lanterns float over the water, personal message fireworks are launched, and a fireworks display lights up the lake as the finale; a night cruise lets you watch it all from the water. There are no bins on site, so plan to take your trash home.

On the day, see what locals are murmuring on the murmur map
murmur is an app that shows short, anonymous posts on a map, right where they were written. On festival day, open the map around the venue and see what people nearby are saying.
