About

On the third Sunday of May, Daisenji temple (Oyama Fudoson) in the Nagasa district of Kamogawa holds this rite to pray for household safety and the granting of wishes. Mountain ascetics dressed as yamabushi appear to the sound of conch shells and purify the ritual ground with an axe, a sword, and a bow and arrows. When the pyre is lit, white smoke and huge flames rise into the sky. After it burns down, the ascetics flatten the embers into a path, and the head priest and ordinary worshippers walk across barefoot, each carrying their own prayers. The temple also unveils the Kurikara dragon carving by the first Nami no Ihachi on this day. Note that a weight limit on the bridge means large buses cannot get up to the temple.
