About
This is the liveliest of the festivals held in Dogo, Matsuyama's hot spring quarter, and it marks the start of spring there. The three days open with the yu-kito, a prayer for the hot spring waters that goes back to the Edo period. The event to catch is the Onna Mikoshi Kakikurabe, where women in happi coats shoulder portable shrines and compete to show the most spirit. There is also rice-cake pounding for long life, a brass band parade and a folk performing arts show, plus a celebratory rice-cake throw every day. The Dogo Onsen Rakuichi Rakuza market sets up stalls, and the streets get packed. Everything happens around Dogo Onsen Honkan, Asuka-no-Onsen and the Dogo shopping arcade, so you can drop by between baths.
