About

For three days in the first lunar month, Iyozuhiko-no-Mikoto Jinja in Matsuyama, known locally as Tsubaki Shrine or Tsubaki-san, holds its spring festival, also called O-Tsubaki-san or Oyoka. Falling around the start of spring by the old calendar, it has long been awaited as the festival that brings spring to Iyo. It begins at midnight on the first day with a great drum and runs day and night to the end, drawing about 500,000 people over the 3 days. Some 800 stalls line the approach roads, which are closed to cars. The standard souvenir is engi-ame, a lucky candy sold only here, and shopkeepers buy kumade rakes to display for good business. On the evening of the middle day comes the Oshinobi no Togyo, when the mikoshi is carried out with the bearers keeping completely silent.
