About
On May 4 and 5, in the middle of Golden Week, Uwajima Castle, Shiroyama Park and the city center host a festival built around the castle. The big event is the samurai procession on May 4, in which participants in full armor play the Date Fifty-Seven Horsemen, joined by children dressed as young warriors and princesses. It recreates what happened in 1615, when Date Hidemune, eldest son of Date Masamune, rode into Uwajima with fifty-seven retainers and became the first lord of the Uwajima domain. Throughout the 2 days there are stage shows and food booths in Shiroyama Park and hands-on activities in the castle keep, an easygoing way to get to know the history of this castle town of the Date family.
