About
In July the Gion festival of Suga Shrine in Amagi, Asakura, sends yamakasa floats racing through town. The custom is said to have started between the Keicho era and the early Edo period, when an epidemic led locals to build a portable shrine and carry the deity around the streets, and it has continued for about 300 years. The big moment is the Oiyama on the 15th, when two pulled floats 3 meters tall are hauled at speed along the streets. Things get underway on July 1 with the oshioi-tori rite, and on the 13th children parade barrel-shaped mikoshi. It costs nothing to watch. Walk about 15 minutes from Amagi Station on the Amagi Railway, or about 3 minutes from the Nishitetsu Amagi Bus Center.
