About

At Oyamazumi Shrine in Haki-Oyama, Asakura, visitors get their faces painted white in one of Japan's odder festivals. The paste is made from that year's new rice, ground and mixed with water, and the ritual gives thanks for the harvest and the parishioners' wellbeing while praying for good crops next year; how well the paste clings is read as a forecast. Once painted, you are not supposed to wash or wipe your face until you are home. Local lore says livestock fed the paste in their feed stay healthy, and that joining every year gives you smooth skin and a long life. The mood is gentle and good-humored. Watching is free, but the shrine has no parking.
