About

Usobuki Hachiman Shrine in Buzen holds its spring procession, called Seibaru Shinji, over two days; it is one of several shrine processions around Buzen at this time of year. Three mikoshi and kasaboko, ceremonial parasols fitted with drums, travel through the neighborhood, and at intervals the bearers lift a mikoshi overhead and whirl it around, each team trying to outdo the others. On the first day the procession heads for the Seibaru ritual ground, arriving after dark for a ceremony and welcome kagura at Futatsuka Shrine by its entrance. Next day the Yamauchi kagura troupe performs yudate kagura, a dance with boiling water, and the procession retraces its route to the shrine. That old-style yudate kagura is the one to catch.
