About
On the night of January 7, giant torches blaze at Daizenji Tamataregu Shrine in Kurume in a fire festival to drive out demons. With a tradition said to run back more than 1,600 years, it is a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and it brings to a close the Onie, a period from New Year's Eve in which priests keep a sacred flame burning. Six huge torches, each about 13 m long and about 1.2 t in weight, are lit, and young men in loincloths prop them up with oak poles and carry them around the main hall under a rain of sparks. Catching some of those sparks is said to keep you healthy all year, so crowds turn out. The torches are assembled on January 4.
