About
In May, the mikoshi and floats of Fuji Hachimangu Shrine in Tagawa wade across the shallows of the Hikosan River. Behind the great mikoshi come 11 banner floats trailing five-colored streamers, all heading into the water. The moment to watch is the gaburi, when the floats are rocked so violently in the river that their front and back wheels lift, throwing up great splashes. The river crossing and a float contest take place on the first afternoon; the mikoshi spend the night at the Butokuden, their temporary resting place, and cross back the next day to return to the shrine. The festival is said to have started in the Eiroku era, when parishioners who had prayed for an epidemic to end built floats to join the procession in thanks, and it was the first Intangible Folk Cultural Property designated by Fukuoka Prefecture. It is right by Tagawa-Ito Station, and at night the floats at the resting place are lit up.
