About
In late autumn, Sukagawa sets the night ablaze. On Mt. Goro, about 30 torches stand ready, the largest up to 10 meters tall and 3 tons in weight, and when they all go up at once the effect is overwhelming. The flame comes from Nikaido Shrine on the castle ruins, carried by young runners on a loop through the city. A small-torch procession open to anyone and taiko drummers in headbands add to the spectacle. The festival is said to have begun as a memorial for the many who died when Date Masamune's forces captured Sukagawa Castle, and is thought to have run for more than 420 years. The 2026 festival is planned for November 14. The site is about 15 minutes on foot from JR Sukagawa Station; roads are restricted on the day and temporary parking is provided.
