About

Danced through the streets of Shirotori in Gujo mainly from mid-July to late August, Shirotori Odori ranks with Gujo Odori as a signature bon dance of Oku-Mino. Its quick, lively rhythm and the hanging kiriko lanterns that dancers move beneath set it apart. The lanterns are said to have first hung in the worship hall of Nagataki Hakusan Shrine when Shinto and Buddhism were merged, then spread to other shrines nearby, a reminder of how strong Hakusan worship is in this area. On the three nights of Obon, dance lovers from across Japan and locals circle a lantern-lit float until daybreak. Some nights also feature the Haiden Odori, an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, so check the schedule.
