About

This festival on Innoshima celebrates the exploits of the Murakami Suigun, the island's seafaring clan, often called the Murakami pirates. It comes in two parts, one of which is the Shimabi fire festival on the beach at night. As darkness falls, armored warriors carrying torches gather on the sand. The Chorakumai, a joyful dance welcoming the fleet home after its mission, is performed, giant torches are swung around to purify the ground, and then ozutsu fireworks shoot into the sky. The night ends with a mass Chorakumai in which performers and onlookers dance side by side. Joining in on the spot is welcome, so don't be shy.
