About
Every January 8, Saikokuji Temple in Onomichi holds a New Year fire ceremony that wraps up the goma prayers that have been offered since New Year's Day. Cypress branches and firewood are lit, and wooden prayer sticks are tossed into the blaze. When the burning is done, the fire-walking rite begins, and mountain ascetics and worshippers walk across ash that is still hot. People come to pray for a healthy year, a safe household and good business, and members of the public can walk too if they pay an entry fee. Afterward, oden stew is handed out as a charm against bad luck.
