A highlight of winter in Hakodate, a port that was among the first in Japan to open to international trade and that absorbed cultures from many countries. In this harbor district of churches and buildings blending Japanese and Western styles, a Christmas tree floats on the water in front of the Red Brick Warehouses, glowing softly through the evening. Parking nearby is scarce, so the streetcar or bus is the easiest way to get there.
