About

When Sapporo's official tree, the lilac, comes into bloom, the city celebrates the start of early summer with this festival. It began in 1959, when local cultural figures called for a cultured event to be held as the lilacs blossomed. At Odori Park, where about 400 lilac trees flower, you'll find a lilac music festival, a wine garden and a stamp rally, along with hands-on corners for traditional games, origami and calligraphy that kids enjoy. Kawashimo Park, which joined as a venue when the festival held its 50th edition, offers guided walks through its lilac forest of more than 200 varieties, plus concerts in the park.
