About
Each June, central Sapporo turns into one big dance floor. Centered on Odori Park, the city's main boulevard, the YOSAKOI Soran Festival blends the wooden naruko clappers of Kochi's Yosakoi Festival with "Soran Bushi," a Hokkaido folk song once sung by herring fishermen as they hauled in their nets. Teams in vivid costumes, clappers in hand, perform their own original routines, and the whole city hums with energy. The first festival drew just 10 teams and 1,000 dancers; today around 270 teams and 27,000 performers take part, watched by some 2 million spectators. Dance stages are set up at many spots across the city.
