About

This is the most important festival of the year at Ikuta Shrine in Kobe's Chuo Ward, held to pray for the safety and prosperity of the neighborhoods the shrine serves. The part to watch is the Shinkosai procession through the streets. The shrine's parish spreads across much of Chuo and Hyogo wards and is split into 12 districts that take turns, so the procession visits each district only once every 12 years. In 2026 it passes through the Hyogo South district on April 12, and the main rite is held at the main sanctuary from 10:00 on April 15. Prayer services are not available on the morning of April 15 because of the rite; they resume at 1 p.m.
