About
Kobe Luminarie strings works of light through central Kobe in the middle of winter, in memory of the victims of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and as a way of carrying on the hope of recovery. The works sit at three sites, Higashi Yuenchi Park, the Former Foreign Settlement and Meriken Park, and the fun is in walking from one to the next. At the 2026 edition (January 30 to February 8), a wall of light about 50m long and 22m high stood on the Higashi Yuenchi lawn, while a gallery of light about 75m long stretched through Meriken Park. The next edition runs from January 29 to February 7, 2027. Only part of Meriken Park charges admission: 500 yen on weekdays and 750 yen on weekends in advance, or 1,000 yen and 1,500 yen on the day. In 2026 the lights stayed on from dusk until 21:30.
