About
Known locally as the "Yakujin-san of Tamba Kaibara," Kaibara Hachimangu Shrine holds this great festival for warding off misfortune every year on February 17 and 18, drawing worshippers from far beyond the region. Late on the night of the 17th comes the Seizan Saidan no Gi, said to be the oldest rite of its kind in Japan and a survivor of the ancient Michiae-no-matsuri and Ekijinsai rites. In the grounds, a three-story pagoda, a Hyogo Prefecture Important Cultural Property, still stands beside the shrine, a rare sight from the era when Shinto and Buddhism were practiced together, and the main sanctuary rebuilt by Hashiba (Toyotomi) Hideyoshi is a national Important Cultural Property. Parking is available.
