About
When the plums bloom, this festival is held at the Mount Tsukuba Plum Grove, about 250 metres up the mountain. Roughly 1,000 trees of about 30 varieties, red and white, grow between big dark boulders of Tsukuba stone, a type of gabbro, creating a scene few other plum groves can match. Climb to the viewing pavilion at the top and the farmland below and the research city of Tsukuba spread out before you; on clear days you can spot Tokyo Skytree and even Mount Fuji. Festival extras include a limited-edition goshuin seal you complete yourself by stamping it at sights around the area, demonstrations of the famous toad-oil vendor's patter, and seasonal dishes made with plums.
