About

Yuki's best-known summer festival, formally the summer grand festival of Takeda Suga Shrine, is said to have been handed down since the Kamakura period. On the opening day, after a ceremony at the shrine, the mikoshi is carried through the parish, with tall lanterns passed from one neighbourhood to the next. It then stays at a temporary shrine in Omachi, and in the evenings during the festival there are visits to the neighbourhood halls in front of it. The middle day brings children's mikoshi, a parade of lantern mikoshi, a festival-music concert and a dance event on the car-free street. On the final day the mikoshi makes another round of the town before returning to the shrine. For an evening visit, choose the opening or closing night, when the station street is closed to traffic and lively with free-style mikoshi carrying.
