About
Every March 15, the day marking the Buddha's passing, Iouji Temple in Yamanaka Onsen, Kaga, holds a Nehan-e memorial service. Once the service is over comes dagomaki, when dumplings in five colours, standing for the Buddha's relics, are thrown out to the people gathered. Folk belief says that eating them keeps bugs away all year. In 2026 the dumpling scattering was held inside the main hall. The temple sits right by the hot spring town and can be reached on foot from the area around the Kikunoyu bathhouse and the Yamanakaza theatre, so you can drop in during a stroll around Yamanaka Onsen. It is a simple, homely event that feels like the start of spring.
