About

Held over three days in Hiraizumi beneath the autumn leaves, this festival honours the Northern Fujiwara clan. On the opening day Chusonji holds a memorial service for the Fujiwara lords, and a charming procession of costumed children holding maple leaves, hymn singers and monks sets out from the main hall and makes its way to the Golden Hall (Konjikido). On the final day Noh is performed on Chusonji’s Noh stage, and local folk performing arts are staged within the temple grounds. At Motsuji, the ennen dance is performed, adding to the late-autumn scenery beneath the turning trees. It comes just as the leaves begin to fall and Chusonji settles back into its quieter season.
