About

Kamaishi’s signature autumn festival combines the long-standing rites of Ozaki Shrine with those of Yama Shrine, guardian of the town’s ironworks. Saturday is the boat festival: the shrine’s sacred object is carried from Ozaki Shrine’s main sanctuary on the Ozaki Peninsula to its shrine in town, and a dozen or more boats flying colourful big-catch flags, carrying tiger dancers and kagura performers, escort the main vessel around Kamaishi harbour. On Sunday the portable shrines of both shrines are carried along the main streets together with tiger dances, kagura, floats and hand dancing, as festival music fills the town. Running for three days from Friday’s eve rites to Sunday’s procession, it is organised by the Kamaishi Matsuri executive committee.
