About

Set on the banks of the Kitakami River, Tenshochi Park is one of the finest cherry blossom spots in the Tohoku region, listed among the country's 100 best cherry blossom sites and counted as one of Tohoku's three great cherry blossom spots. A tunnel of cherry trees stretches for about 2 km from Sango Bridge, and the park is said to hold some 10,000 trees of around 150 varieties, blooming in turn from the Somei-yoshino in April to the Kasumi-zakura in early May. During the festival, colorful carp streamers fly high above the river and horse-drawn carriages roll beneath the blossoms; after dark, the illuminated trees are reflected in the water. First planted in 1921, the park has survived floods and been cared for by local people for more than a century. Parking is charged during the festival.
