About
This festival celebrates Miyako's winter seafood, with hairy crab as the star. At the festival, stalls sell live and boiled hairy crabs along with other local specialties and street food. The most popular attraction is crab fishing with a single line, which costs a fee; entries are taken at the venue on the day and participants are chosen by lottery. Shoppers who spend over a set amount also get tickets for a prize draw. The Miyako Wakame Festival is held at the same time, offering tastings of fresh wakame seaweed dipped shabu-shabu style. Free shuttle buses and shuttle boats run to the venue, and in 2026 a special rapid train, the Miyako Kegani-go, ran from Morioka. The 2026 festival was the twenty-fourth.
