About
The Awashima Momote Festival at Awashima Shrine on the island of Awashima is an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Kagawa Prefecture. Momote festivals herald spring in Mitoyo and are held around the city to ward off misfortune and pray for good catches, good harvests and safe seas. Archery rites in front of the shrine survive in their old form, and spectators crowd round, holding their breath to see if each arrow finds the target. The city's other momote festivals, the Namari Momote Festival in Takuma (a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property) and the prefecture-designated Ohama Momote Festival, take place on different days.
