About
At Zentsuji, the head temple standing where Kobo Daishi (Kukai) was born, the Dai-Eyo spends two days praying to drive off misfortune, invite good luck and bring a rich harvest. The word eyo carries the idea of coming through a harsh winter to meet a bright, fruitful spring. On the first day, a service in the Miedo Hall blesses the shingi, sacred wooden batons handed to the lucky men chosen that year. On the last day, around ten thousand inaho charms, each wrapped around a slim chopstick-like stick and blessed with secret Shingon rites, are scattered from the Five-Story Pagoda along with rice cakes of all sizes. Catching one is said to bring a good harvest, good health and good fortune. The eastern precinct also hosts a rice-cake strength contest and a festive market, and the grounds are packed.
