About
Zentsuji Temple marks the birth of Kobo Daishi (Kukai), born here on the 15th day of the sixth month in 774, with what it regards as its most important ceremony. The rites take place in the Mieido Hall, built on the site of the Saeki family home where Kukai was born. For both days, the inner sanctuary's shrine holds a standing statue of Kukai as a child, when he was called Mao, guarded by the Four Heavenly Kings. Temples of the Shingon Zentsuji school take turns leading the service on the first day, and on the second, incense and tea are offered together with a hundred kinds of offerings in thanks to the Daishi. A Daishi market is held in the eastern precinct for the occasion.
