About
Held in spring at Hashimazaki Shrine in Hashima, Ichikikushikino, this unusual festival asks for a big catch at sea and a good crop on land at once, and it is an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Kagoshima Prefecture. The part most people come for is the taguchi, where the characters Techo and Taro play off an ox in a comic routine that prays for the harvest. In the other part, the funamochi, model danbe barges and sailboats are brought out of the sanctuary, and boat-song singers and their helpers rock them up and down as they circle the grounds, asking for full nets and safe voyages. Watching is free.
