About

Each spring Sengan-en garden in Kagoshima City hosts this banquet tied to the Shimazu family. Guests in formal samurai dress sit along a winding stream; as a cup of sake floats down toward them, each must finish a poem before it passes, then pick it up and drink. The stream garden was uncovered by excavation in 1959 and is said to be the largest of its kind left in Japan, known for keeping much of its original shape. You need a Sengan-en admission ticket to watch. If it rains, the poetry gathering moves to the audience hall in the residence and is closed to spectators.
