About

Chigasaki's spring festival celebrates Ooka Tadasuke, the Edo-period magistrate famed for his wise judgments. He is buried at Jokenji, a temple in the north of the city on land the Ooka family once governed. In 2026 the festival ran for 2 days. The final day was the big one, with a grand parade led by a procession in Edo-period dress, plus a staging of Ooka's famous trials at the Chigasaki City Cultural Hall. Day one brought a concert outside the north exit of Chigasaki Station and a neighborhood fair at Jokenji with picture-card storytelling, a walking event and a filling Ooka hot pot. An industry fair runs on both days. The festival traces back to 1912, when Ooka was posthumously given court rank and a memorial was held at his grave the next year; interrupted by the Great Kanto Earthquake and the war, it was revived in 1956.
