About
On January 15 each year, the Little New Year, girls in red festive kimono dance in Misaki, Miura, at Kainan Shrine and in the Nakazaki and Hanagure districts. Holding fans or thin bamboo sticks called chakkirako, they move to songs and chanted calls from women who sing with no instruments at all; this is a tradition kept by women alone. The repertoire has 6 pieces, including Hatsuise, Chakkirako and Oise-mairi. In the morning the dances are offered before the small shrine of the original sanctuary and the main hall of Kainan Shrine; in the afternoon the girls dance at the shrines of the dragon gods, then make the rounds of old households and long-standing shops to bless them. Performed for good catches, harvests and business, it is an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and part of UNESCO's Furyu-odori listing.
