About
Muroto's fishermen have danced the Shittoroto for around 300 years, it is said, to pray for big catches, and the dance is an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Kochi Prefecture. The dancers are people who work in fishing. At dawn on the tenth day of the sixth lunar month they make their first offering at Ebisu Shrine in Muroto's Moto district, then move on through the Ukitsu and Murotsu districts, dancing at shrine after shrine and temple after temple. Because the date is set by the lunar calendar, it lands on a different day of the modern calendar every year, so check the conversion for the year you plan to visit.
