About

Fuwa Hachimangu in Shimanto holds an autumn festival famous for a wedding between gods, celebrated with the portable shrines of a male and a female deity. The male deity's mikoshi tours the town and waits at the shrine, then the female deity's mikoshi arrives and the two are ceremonially joined. Lord Ichijo, who brought the shrine's deity here, is said to have started the rite to discourage marriage by abduction, then a common practice, and it is rare anywhere in Japan. Day one has the main and eve rites plus offerings of Tosa Nakamura Ichijo taiko, children's sumo, yosakoi, folk dance and Hata kagura. On day two the mikoshi go out in the morning, followed by the Funato-age rite, also called eggplant-grabbing, the joining of the mikoshi and the main ceremony, and a rice-cake toss to finish.
