About

When the irises bloom in early summer, Nishinokubo Park in Hondo, Amakusa, holds a festival in their honor. Sit down at the tea room in the iris garden and sip a bowl of tea with the flowers in front of you. Around 30 stalls form a big bazaar of Amakusa food and products, the stage hosts Haiya dancing, other dance acts and bands, and children can join a stamp rally or ride a mini train. After dark a firefly night market opens and bamboo lanterns light up the iris garden for an entirely different scene. The festival is run by the Amakusa Iris Festival Executive Committee with Amakusa City as co-host. Weather can delay the blooms, and on rainy days the festival's official Instagram says whether it is on. Roads near the park get busy, so use the free shuttle bus from the Amakusa City Hall parking lot.
