About
Misumi East Port in Uki throws a summer harbor festival to coincide with Marine Day. Shinto rites at the east and west ports open the morning, and a Marine Day ceremony follows at the Misumi disaster-prevention center. You can sail on the Japan Coast Guard patrol ship Kumakaze (apply in advance), go aboard a marine environment maintenance ship, a fisheries patrol boat and a cargo ship, and look over Ground Self-Defense Force equipment, a rare chance to get up close to working vessels. Local nursery and school groups play on stage, community groups dance in a parade and yosakoi dancers perform. After dark, fireworks rise over the sea. With the Sea Pyramid and the harbor as your backdrop, it is a very Misumi kind of day. Fireworks are cancelled in stormy weather, and since the area gets crowded, come by public transport or take the shuttle bus from the temporary parking lots.
