About
In early spring the old castle town of Yatsushiro fills with hina dolls. One key venue is Shohinken, a tea garden that castle lord Matsui Naoyuki built for his mother and now a national Place of Scenic Beauty, where Edo-period dolls kept by the Matsui family go on show for the season. The festival started by linking Shohinken, the city museum and the town center, and the Hinagu hot spring area joined later. Pop-up doll halls in the Honmachi and Toricho shopping arcades display handmade dolls and hanging ornaments, and shops set out sets passed down in their families. Over in Hinagu, a spa town with about 600 years of history, inns and the Banpeiyu bathhouse show dolls too. With a stamp rally, guided doll walks and seasonal hina lunches and sweets, it pairs perfectly with a stroll through town.
