About
Fushimi Inari Taisha's Hatsuuma festival commemorates the day in February 711 when, according to the shrine, the Inari deity first came down to the three peaks of Mt. Inari: the first Day of the Horse of that month. Two days before, the main hall and smaller shrines are decorated with aoyama-kazari, greenery made from cedar and chinquapin branches from the mountain. Also called fuku-mairi (a pilgrimage for good fortune), the visit draws crowds from the day before, praying for business success and a safe household, and it is known as the first great festival of the new spring in Kyoto. Visitors can receive shirushi-no-sugi, a cedar sprig charm said to come from the custom of pilgrims returning from Kumano taking a cedar twig as proof of a safe journey home. The shrine sits right in front of JR Inari Station.
