About

Known as the Gion Festival of Kuchi-Tanba, this is Kameoka's biggest autumn festival and the annual rite of Kuwayama Shrine. It is a designated intangible folk cultural property, and the neighborhoods of the old castle town decorate 11 elaborate floats. On the eve, the 24th, lanterns glow under the eaves and handmade paper lanterns line the streets. On the main day, the 25th, the floats roll out from their neighborhoods and gather on Hatago-cho street around 11 a.m. After the mayor performs a traditional permit-checking ceremony, they set off again and return home. A castle-town festival with local hospitality runs at the same time.
