About
On the Saturday and Sunday closest to the first Day of the Horse in early March, Okadera-san Keisho-ji in Naka-machi, Matsusaka, fills with people seeking protection from misfortune. Said to have been founded by the monk Gyoki in 743, the temple is regarded as Japan's first sacred site of the misfortune-warding Kannon. Over the two days, prayers against bad luck are offered from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and crowds of worshippers, including men and women in their unlucky years, spill out into the surrounding streets. Some local shops sell items such as nejiri-okoshi and saruhajiki, so a stroll around the neighborhood after your visit is part of the fun. The temple is about a 10-minute walk from JR/Kintetsu Matsusaka Station.
