About
From January 9 to 16, Senju-ji, head temple of the Takada branch of Shin Buddhism in Isshinden, Tsu, holds Hoonko. Timed to January 16, the anniversary of the death of the founder Shinran, it is the most important service of the temple's year, and because it runs for seven days and nights it is fondly called Oshichiya, "the Seven Nights." Each evening a liturgy praising Shinran's virtues is chanted, and by custom the illustrated scrolls of his life are hung. If you want to attend the evening liturgy, plan your visit for the early night. The temple is about a 3-minute walk from JR Isshinden Station.
