About

On Setsubun, a fox wedding procession winds through the grounds of Miyamado Shrine in Yokkaichi in a rite to drive away bad luck. Passed down since long ago as a demon-expelling ceremony, it reenacts the journey of a fox maiden, a messenger of the shrine's deity, going to marry a young fox of the head family. The bride and groom are local parishioners facing an unlucky year, dressed in fox masks and wedding clothes. Led by red and blue demons, they parade with a go-between and relatives in formal wear, bearers of the bride's trousseau, and flute and drum players. After circling the grounds, the party climbs onto a special stage, the couple exchange the ritual three-times-three sake cups, and lucky rice cakes and beans in gift envelopes are thrown to the crowd. Some envelopes contain a sakaki leaf branded with the characters for "ten thousand ryo"; kept as a charm, it is said to bring in money. The shrine is right by Kintetsu Miyamado Station, and watching is free.
