About
Kashimadai's traditional market dates back to 1910, when village head Kamata Sannosuke started it so villagers could sell their crops and homemade goods. More than a century later it is one of the largest markets of its kind in Tohoku, held for three days each spring and autumn. Around 180 stalls line some 600 meters of Showa-dori street, selling farm produce, seafood, handicrafts, clothing and more. Chatting with vendors and stumbling on unexpected finds is part of the charm of this old-style market. Shuttle buses run to the site from the parking lot at Kamata Memorial Hall.
