About

This festival heralds early summer in Tagajo. It takes place in an iris garden of about 21,000 square meters within the Tagajo Ruins, a designated Special Historic Site, where some three million plants of about 800 varieties of ayame, kakitsubata and hanashobu irises bloom — said to be the widest selection in the Tohoku region. The three types flower one after another, with timing shifting with the weather. During the festival the South Gate of Tagajo is specially lit up at night, and there are smartphone audio guides to the garden, evening performances on ancient flutes and art installations, while a weekend fair adds stage shows and outdoor tea. Inspired by a haiku about irises that Matsuo Basho wrote on leaving Sendai, the festival also invites haiku submissions.
