About
When the jacaranda blooms, the Michi-no-Eki Nango roadside station in Nichinan holds a festival in its honour. The jacaranda is counted among the world's three great flowering trees, and a grove of about 1,000 of them surrounds the station; the purple flowers are usually at their best from late May to mid-June. On festival weekends there are free samples of local specialties such as tree-ripened mango, a lottery for jacaranda seedlings, a class on how to grow them, and stage shows by local hula teams and others. After dark the grove is lit up, turning into a dreamy, tropical scene. The station's terrace looks out over the Hyuga-nada Sea, and the tropical-fruit soft-serve is a favourite.
