About
Said to go back to the Kamakura period, this naked festival heralds spring in the Ina Valley. At Chosekiji Temple in Tokimata, in the Tatsuoka area of Iida, prayers are offered for good harvests, protection from bad luck and road safety. Then men in loincloths shoulder portable shrines shaped like a horse and a sake barrel and head down to Tokimata Port on the Tenryu River. Once in the still-frigid March water, they jostle and compete amid flying spray, drawing cheers from onlookers. According to the regional tourism site Minami Shinshu Navi, it is held on the second Sunday of March. You can walk to the venue from Tokimata Station on the JR Iida Line.
